Dismantling the Industry of Poverty
Lebohang Liepollo Pheko discusses the systemic issues that perpetuate poverty, including gender inequality, racism, colonialism, and economic imbalances. She critiques the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for not addressing these structural issues. Pheko calls for a decolonial feminist theory to understand these macroeconomic dimensions. She also suggests redefining poverty beyond material conditions to include aspects like poverty of speech, social capital, power, leisure, life choices, and time. She proposes solutions such as following the money to stop illicit financial flows, thinking beyond GDP as a measure of economic welfare, and adopting well-being indexes that consider internal peace and physical health.
